Hurricane Katrina Pet Airlift

Saturday, December 5, 2005

In partnership with a Los Angeles rescue group, we chartered a 747 and loaded it up with as many lost pets as the plane could hold to bring them back here to Amarillo. The conditions at the makeshift shelters were appalling, as cages of pets were stacked on top of each other, but this was the best way that they could be cared for in such great numbers and in the harsh environment. Makeshift tents gave pets temporary shelter to protect them from the weather. There were so many animals that pet owners were forced to abandon at gunpoint by the police and national guard. The volunteers who worked to feed and clean these rescued pets worked around the clock in soggy weather.

Jennifer from L.A. arranged to have many pets adopted. In Amarillo, we brought back many pets that found good homes.

Already getting some love. in Amarillo.

Laz tags pets so we can airlift them to Amarillo.

Laz consoles a pet that we can't bring… we might on our next trip.

One of many volunteers looks after some of the hundreds of cat cages.

This guy could not be saved even with the volunteers trying hard …but he died with people who loved him.

Say a prayer and please help. All the homeless pets…they depend on us.

My heart breaks I wanted to bring all these babies back… It was so hard leaving them behind…
